At UNSW, we recognise that not all schools experience the same levels of educational advantage, and that ATAR is not the only indication of your potential to study successfully at university.
The Gateway scheme acknowledges that our University can do more to assist students experiencing educational disadvantage at schools that are consistently under-represented here at UNSW.
Gateway could be your pathway to a degree at UNSW.
UNSW Gateway Scheme FAQs

- What is UNSW Gateway?
UNSW has a commitment to equality of opportunity. As part of this commitment, we want to ensure that as many young people as possible are able to access higher education. At UNSW we understand that ATAR alone is not the only measure of academic potential and that schools can experience different levels of educational advantage.
UNSW Gateway is a contextualised entry scheme to be introduced by the University from 2018.
The term contextualised entry means that additional information may be taken into account when reviewing individual ATAR achievements. For UNSW Gateway, we have considered the level of disadvantage associated with where schools are located in terms of geography and socio-economic status.
- What schools are included in UNSW Gateway?
School eligibility is based on indicators that classify the school as being in a disadvantaged location. Analysis of data has shown us that the higher the level of disadvantage, the lower the high school median ATAR is likely to be. This can make it difficult for students with the potential to achieve at UNSW to receive an offer. Gateway addresses this issue by providing a differentiated offer.
The list of schools provided is current for all students in Year 12 in 2017 wanting to apply for entry to UNSW entry in 2018.
The University will review the definition of schools in low-socioeconomic, regional and remote areas and their performance each year to update the schools included in the scheme.
- What is the application process for UNSW Gateway?
Applications are made through the Universities Admissions Centre (www.uac.edu.au) where early bird applications need to be lodged by 28 September 2018. You can list up to five preferences on your application in order of what you want to study the most.
On 14 December 2018, ATARs are released. You may change your preference order up to 16 December 2018 for the December Round 2 offers.
The process is automatic. If you have listed a Gateway eligible degree as your highest possible preference and achieve the required selection rank, you will receive an offer on 20 December 2018.
- Can I use adjustment factors as part of my application for Gateway eligible degrees?
Gateway is designed as a stand-alone entry option at UNSW. If your highest eligible preference is a UNSW course with Guaranteed Entry rank of 90 or below, your selection rank will be adjusted. This will happen automatically.
If the degree you wish to study has a Guaranteed Entry rank of above 90. You can apply for other pathways, such as the Educational Access Scheme (called ACCESS at UNSW), which would be considered separately by UAC.
The ACCESS scheme allows students to apply for additional points if certain circumstances have affected your high school studies. Gateway and ACCESS are separate schemes. Students are not able to use both.
For more information about ACCESS visit https://www.unsw.edu.au/access-scheme
- How will I know if I have entry through UNSW Gateway?
If you are attending a school in the Gateway scheme in Year 12 a differentiated offer will automatically be calculated for you.
Once ATARs are released, you will receive an email from UNSW with a link to your personalised website. On this website you will see your preference to UNSW and whether or not you have an offer for any of those degrees.
- I didn’t meet the required entry rank through UNSW Gateway – what can I do to still get a place at UNSW?
We encourage you to consider all your options to maximise your chance to study at university. At UNSW, Gateway is just one pathway you may be able to use.ACCESS: For all degrees, students can apply for bonus points based on disadvantage or misadventure during their HSC year. This is automatic for schools which have been classified as disadvantaged, but for other categories you must submit an application. For more information go to https://www.unsw.edu.au/access-scheme.
UNSW Prep: If you are keen to study at university but have faced challenges in Year 11 and 12 that make you eligible for the UNSW ACCESS Scheme, and you don't meet the required rank for degree entry, you should consider UNSW Prep, a one year (18 months for Engineering) pathway course to a UNSW degree place.
